Advent Reflection DAY 1 – Waiting In Hope

hopeWaiting in Hope

1st Sunday of Advent
“Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to hold your ground before the Son of man.” -Lk 21:36

Many times in this Gospel of Luke we were asked to ‘watch and pray’. Christian life is not just a matter of goodness alone, but also ‘being’ good. This presupposes both an act of faith and an act of will to do the good. I was taught early on that a Christian should hold and read the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other hand. This is so that whatever one reads in the paper – no matter how sad or grim it may be, that same person can put everything into prayer and action. Quite a big task! That is why, to meet such a demand in the spiritual life, the Church has given us this season of Advent. Advent is a time of ‘waiting’ in HOPE.Notice my keyword here. It is not ‘having’ hope or ‘being’ in hope, for it is assumed that if we have faith, then we have this theological virtue.

The question is, now that we have this Hope, what can we do with it?

As the Gospel suggests, we wait, and we anticipate. This is not with fear or worry of course, but with an assurance that everything will be alright. We are filled with the security of being loved by God, who came as a man, and will bestow forgiveness of sins and grace in life.

Reading the Gospel then, what did you feel? Were you afraid? Were you disturbed? Maybe the Gospel aims for that. But, even though there is worry, there is hope.
